We gave a paper at the British Association for Applied Linguistics at the University of York in August 2023. The topic of the conference “Opening up Applied Linguistics” gave us the opportunity to explore the intersections between Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology against a sociological background. The talk focused on modelling microaggressions from a linguistic perspective – something which had not been adequately considered in neighbouring disciplines despite the importance given to verbal hostility. Microaggressions are therefore defined as a “mild” type of impoliteness, characterised by repetition at the individual and/or the collective level, causing feelings of frustration, irritation and sudden upset. We then explained how we achieved further refinement of the concept through (studies in the field of) linguistic impoliteness. We presented data from interviews (conducted in 2018-2022) to European academic migrants working in the UK.
